So, who are you?

I’m Amir-Mohammad Kooshky—the person on the left.

What are your qualifications?

I scored 120 on the TOEFL in 2025. I also took the GRE and scored 169 out of 170 in Verbal Reasoning and 5 in Analytical Writing.

As far as I know, scores like these are either unmatched in Iran or held by only a handful of people. I have not personally seen another case yet; if you know someone, please send them my way. So, to the person who asked: no, the fact that my university degree is not in English does not mean I do not know what I am doing.

All right, so what is your university degree in?

I have a bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering from Sharif University of Technology. I have also been admitted to a PhD position at a Max Planck Institute in Germany in my own field. The embassy is currently closed, so I started teaching English partly to avoid sitting around unemployed. I ended up liking it, and I plan to continue after I move as well.

Where did you learn English?

I studied at the Iran Language Institute from the children’s courses all the way through the highest adult level and completed the program. Honestly, though, that was maybe ten percent of the journey. The rest came from films, television, books, news, documentaries, YouTube, and almost everything else I have followed only in English since I was fourteen.

In high school, I studied for the Chemistry Olympiad—which, yes, has a lot to do with Computer Engineering. Anyone who has done Olympiad preparation knows that nearly all the serious resources are in English. That gave me a lot of exposure to academic English, although I still had not needed to write or present scientific material myself.

At university, I completed many remote internships with universities in the United Kingdom, Germany, Singapore, and elsewhere. I wrote a huge amount in English, prepared and delivered presentations, read and wrote papers, spoke and debated in meetings, and did countless other academic tasks. That environment is what made my academic English genuinely strong: I was using it every day.

مدرکت چیه؟

نمره ۱۲۰ رو تو آزمون تافل سال ۲۰۲۵ گرفتم. آزمون GRE رو هم دادم که تو قسمت وربال (مربوط به انگلیسی) نمره ۱۶۹ از ۱۷۰ گرفتم و تو قسمت رایتینگ هم ۵ گرفتم.

تا جایی که خبر دارم این نمرات تو ایران یا ازش نیست یا در بهترین حالت تعداد انگشت‌شمار هست (که من ندیدم هنوز؛ اگه سراغ دارید حتماً معرفی کنین لطفاً). پس خدمت اون دوست عزیز بگم که «نه، چون مدرک دانشگاهیم زبان نیست دلیل نمیشه بی‌سواد باشم.»

اوکی، حالا مدرک دانشگاهیت چیه؟

عرضم به خدمتتون که لیسانس مهندسی کامپیوتر دارم از شریف. الانم ادمیشن دکتری دارم از مؤسسه ماکس‌پلانک آلمان برای رشته خودم، ولی سفارت تعطیله؛ پس برای فرار از بیکاری دارم تدریس زبان می‌کنم. البته خوشم اومده و بعد مهاجرت هم ادامه‌ش خواهم داد.

زبان از کجا یاد گرفتی؟

من کانون زبان ایران رو از دوره کودکان تا ته بزرگسالان رفتم و تموم شد. البته این صادقانه ۱۰ درصد راهه. بقیه‌ش میشه فیلم و سریال و کتاب و اخبار و مستند و یوتیوب و… که از ۱۴ سالگی همشو فقط به‌صورت انگلیسی دنبال می‌کردم.

دوران دبیرستان المپیاد شیمی خوندم (خییلی به رشته‌م ربط داره، می‌دونم) و کسایی که المپیادی بوده باشن می‌دونن که همه منابع انگلیسیه. پس اونجا خیلی با انگلیسی آکادمیک دست‌وپنجه نرم کردم، ولی هنوز نیاز نشده بود مطلب علمی بنویسم یا پرزنت کنم.

توی دانشگاه هم چون مقدار زیادی اینترنشیپ از راه دور با دانشگاه‌های خارجی انگلیس و آلمان و سنگاپور و… داشتم، بی‌نهایت به انگلیسی متن نوشتم، پرزنت کردم، مقاله نوشتم و خوندم، تو جلسات صحبت و بحث کردم و هزار کار دیگه. این باعث شد در نهایت انگلیسی آکادمیکم خیییلی خوب شه، چون تو محیط بودم.
